The science of grounding

— what it is, what the research shows, and why we built Erthy.

The Mechanism

The Earth's surface carries a stable, mild negative electrical charge. This is not a wellness claim — it is a measurable property of the planet. The charge exists because of continuous lightning strikes (approximately 2,000 per minute globally), solar radiation, and geomagnetic activity. The result is a perpetual reservoir of free electrons at the Earth's surface.

Free electrons are relevant to health because of free radicals. Free radicals are positively charged molecules that damage cells, trigger inflammatory cascades, and accelerate biological aging. The primary way the body neutralizes free radicals is through antioxidants — molecules that donate electrons to stabilize them. The Earth's surface is the most abundant source of free electrons on the planet.

When your body is in direct contact with the Earth, electrons flow in. The mechanism is electrochemical and operates at the cellular level. It does not require belief. It does not require a protocol. It requires contact.

The Research

Peer-reviewed research on grounding has been published in multiple journals since the early 2000s. The key findings:

Inflammation (Chevalier et al., 2012): Thermal imaging of grounded subjects showed reduced inflammatory markers and accelerated resolution of delayed-onset muscle soreness compared to ungrounded controls. Published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

Sleep and cortisol (Ghaly and Teplitz, 2004): Grounded subjects showed normalization of cortisol rhythm — lower night-time levels and a stronger morning peak. The study also reported improved sleep quality and reduced pain in the grounded group. Published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

Autonomic nervous system (Chevalier, 2010): Grounding produced a measurable shift from sympathetic to parasympathetic dominance. This is the shift the body needs to enter deep restorative sleep and engage its repair processes. Published in the European Biology and Bioelectromagnetics journal.

Blood viscosity (Chevalier et al., 2013): Grounded subjects showed significant reductions in blood viscosity — a key risk factor for cardiovascular events. Published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

This is not a complete list. The full body of earthing research is available through PubMed. We encourage you to read the primary sources.

The Historical Context

Humans evolved in constant contact with the Earth. For the vast majority of human history, sleeping on the ground was the default. Shoes were minimal or nonexistent. Rest happened on soil, grass, or stone.

The systematic insulation of the human body from the Earth is a recent development. Rubber-soled shoes became widespread in the mid-twentieth century. Raised beds, elevated foundations, and synthetic flooring followed. By the late twentieth century, the average person in a developed country had near-zero daily contact with the Earth's surface.

This is not a condemnation of modern life. It is an observation about what has changed — and what may be worth restoring. Grounding is not a new wellness trend. It is a restoration of a condition that was universal for all of human history until about 80 years ago.

The Philosophy

There is a broader point behind Erthy that goes beyond the earthing research.

Modern wellness has largely become about addition. More supplements. More devices. More tracking. More optimization. The underlying assumption is that more inputs produce better outputs.

Erthy is built around a different assumption: that some of the most important inputs for health are the ones we have removed, not the ones we have added. Sunlight. Sleep. Real food. Movement. Contact with the Earth.

None of these are new ideas. None of them require a subscription or a protocol. They require only the conditions under which the human body evolved to function.

We built Erthy because we believe the bedroom — the place where the body does its most essential repair work — should support those conditions. The grounding sheet is our version of one of those inputs: simple, ancient, and increasingly absent from modern life.
